Many of us strive for a flat and well-shaped abdomen area by exercising and changing our diet. Sometimes, however, even all this fails to achieve our goals. Even in cases with otherwise normal body weight and proportions, a sagging or bulging belly can develop. The most common causes of this condition include pregnancy, significant weight fluctuations, previous abdominal wall surgery or simply heredity. Abdominoplasty removes excess abdominal fat and skin, or repairs abdominal muscle spacing and a lax abdominal wall profile.
The goal, from the plastic surgeon’s perspective, is to achieve natural proportions and create a more symmetrical, aesthetically pleasing body profile. However, the exact procedure is always subject to the individual’s ideas and needs.
What can’t abdominoplasty do?
Abdominoplasty is not a substitute for weight loss or an appropriate exercise program. The outcome can be significantly affected by significant weight fluctuations after surgery. For this reason, if you are planning significant weight loss or future pregnancy, we recommend that you delay surgery. Abdominoplasty also cannot correct stretch marks, but it can reduce them if they are located in the area of skin that will be removed.
